From the publication:
INTRODUCTION Energy is necessary for all human activities. So the present society needs an effective and uninterrupted supply of energy. However, 'reliability' is no longer the sole essential criterium which is set for the provision of energy. The criterium of 'sustainability' is gaining an increasingly important role in the use of energy, and therefore also in the energy research carried out by the Netherlands Energy Research Foundation, ECN. A sustainable supply of energy means that the energy required is provided without limiting the options for future generations. Environmental threats and the growing energy demand, in particular in the developing countries, are the main obstacles for the development of such an energy supply.
