HINKLEY POINT C POWER STATION PUBLIC INQUIRY The Economics of Nuclear and Fossil Fuelled Plant Memorandum by F.P. Jenkin, CEGB INTRODUCTION 1. This paper is presented to the Hinkley Point c Public Inquiry in response to a request by the Inspector. At Day 4 page 10 c to E the Inspector couched his request in the following terms: "I have considered carefully during the course of this week, in the light of what has been said, the question of evidence on an economic appraisal of the pressurised water reactor as compared with fossil fuelled generating plant. I understand clearly the Board's case on this matter. Nonetheless I think that the Secretary of State and I might be assisted by further evidence from the Board on this topic, and consequently I ask the Board to consider whether they are willing, at my request, to produce such evidence. I wish to make and to emphasise two points on this request. First, I am not deciding for or against the Board's case on the relevance of such evidence. I will not decide that until I have heard all relevant submissions on the point. If the Board decide to accede to my request it would be perfectly in order for them to produce the evidence, expressly without prejudice to their primary contention that such evidence is not necessary for the decision of the Secretary of State. The Board's decision on my request, and any action that it may take, will not prejudice in any way my assessment of that primary contention. The second point is perhaps an obvious one. If the Board decide to accede to my request, the exact nature and form of any such further evidence is a matter for them, and for their decision."
