HISTORY OF THE SWEDISH ATOM BOMB

Stockholm NY TEKNIK No 17 in Swedish 25 April 85 pp 55-83

(Article by Christer Larsson: "Build a Bomb!")

[Text) NY TEKNIK today publishes the previously unknown history of Swedish
nuclear weapons development during the years 1945 to 1972. Unknown to the
Swedish people and to the Swedish parliament, but known to a handful of
technicians, military people and politicians of the innermost circle of the
Erlander administration.

The civilian portion of the Swedish nuclear energy program has been scrutinized and
documented before, but the military and political part has lacked its historiography.

Working for one year, NY TEKNIK 's Christer Larsson has documented the story, by
challenging the secrecy of a large number of previously secret-classified documents
within the Defense Research Institute [FOA] and the Defense Staff, in hundreds of
interviews with persons who directly or indirectly participated in the development
work.

The report vas made possible through great courtesy from those responsible
within FOA and the Defense Staff and great openness from those interviewed.
It is regrettable that Olof Palme has not shown the same openness and courtesy.

NY TEKNIK publishes the documentation and the report because it provides a very
illuminating picture of the highly technological development work, the political
manoeuvring and how democratic principles can be eliminated; so far, the
government has rejected allegations that development work aimed at Swedish
nuclear weapons vas under way in the 1960's.
