Director General's Summary

The following results and experience of strategic importance from the 1994/95
financial year should be particularly emphasized:

Reactor Safety

SKI's evaluation of the renovation of Oskarsharmn 1 and other major evaluations
have yielded very valuable results for SKI in terms of the evaluation and promotion of
the power utilities' ongoing work on the review and improvement of safety at the
nuclear power reactors, starting with those of an early design. Older safety
assessment reports must be reviewed, with great care and in great detail, with the
help of modem methods. After consulting with the Swedish parliament, the Swedish
government has decided to ratify the international nuclear safety convention which
SKI has helped to prepare.

Safeguards

SKI has contributed to ensuring that the IAEA has taken essential steps towards
alternative, more efficient forms of international safeguards for fissile material
under the Non-proliferation Treaty. After Sweden joined the European Union, the
changeover to nuclear material control under the treaty establishing the European
Atomic Energy Community (Euratom Treaty) was efficiently accomplished,
without complications.
