Summary of Work in Progress at Risø

This report gives a summary of the chief activities of the research establishment
Risø. These are roughly divided into sections dealing with nuclear technology,
applied research, basic research, and research facilities and auxiliary services. For
more detailed descriptions of the work in progress, readers are referred to the annual
reports of the various departments, and to the other research reports published in the
two report series, as well as to articles appearing in scientific journals. A list of
the publications is given in appendix 3.

Nuclear Technology
Nuclear technology work at Risø serves the purpose of enabling the establishment
to contribute to safety assessments, and to provide advice and assistance to Danish
utilities and industry in connection with the construction and operation of nuclear
power stations. Advice is also given to government bodies on other aspects of the
introduction of nuclear power into Denmark.

Consultant Activities
Assistance was given to Elsam (an association of the utilities in Jutland and on
Funen) in preparing material for an application for site approval of a location at
Gylling Næs, Jutland. Work included the calculation of radiation doses to the
environment from airborne releases of radioactivity from a LWR plant, as well as
releases to the marine environment within a distance of 50 km from Gylling Næs.
Measurement of meteorological variables at Gylling Næs was continued, and
consistancy was found between these data and data from 10 years of observations
made at Risø, i. e. the Risø data may be used for dispersion calculations at Gylling
Næs. A small meteorological station was established at Ørby Hage in south Jutland.
Further evaluations were made of certain safety conditions at some of the possible
nuclear power sites in the distribution area of Kraftimport (an association of
utilities on Zealand).
