Introduction.

ELKRAFT and ELSAM together investigated the possibilities of disposing of
radioactive waste in salt domes in Northern Jutland. The work was carried out in
two phases: initial investigations based on the geological knowledge then available
were carried out from 1977 to 1978 (phase 1). From then and until the beginning
of 1981, extensive geological investigations including material testing were carried
out (phase 2). A safety evaluation was prepared on the basis of these findings. The
purpose of this was to demonstrate that high-level waste could safely be deposited
in the Mors salt dome. It was not the purpose of the report to select the Mors dome
as that preferable for this purpose. The final selection ot a repository dome, if such
a dome is to be used, will not take place until about 40-50 years hence in a third
phase that would include the actual designing of the repository, including an
application to the Minister for the Environment for a construction permit.
