1 Polluter - Mayak complex The Chemical Factory, which later became the Mayak complex, has operated in the South Urals since 1948. By the Officials said it was needed as a nuclear shield against the "aggressors from abroad. " The Complex produced plutonium for Soviet atomic bomb. On August 20, 1949, the first atomic bomb was tested on Semipalatinsk Testing Site. THE OFFICIAL DOCUMENTS "During the first few years of working with nuclear materials, we had had no experience with or scientific studies on protecting health of human beings or the environment. Because of this, some territories near the Complex were contaminated. Serious contamination was caused by an accident that took place on September 29, 1957.
