FOREWORD

Although cogeneration has a long history it has yet to make any significant
headway in this country. As a result most of the potential of around 1500 MW to
2000 MW of cogeneration capacity which, according to the estimates made by the
National Productivity Council, exists in Indian Industries, has yet to be tapped.

2. The present study, conducted at the instance of the Advisory Board on Energy,
by Messers J.C.Shah Associates examines in detail the suggestion that the realisation
of cogeneration potential can be accelerated by setting up a special agency for this
purpose.

3.The report contains a great deal of useful information and has made some
valuable recommendations which deserve the careful consideration of all those
who are interested in the early realisation of our cogeneration potential, in the
context of the chronic energy shortages from which the country suffers.
