FOREWORD This publication is intended to assist governments in assessing the extent to which nuclear energy is compatible with the goals of sustainable development and how it can best contribute to them. It provides a review of specific characteristics of nuclear energy from the economic, environmental and social viewpoints of sustainable development, focusing on key issues of relevance for policy makers. The document does not prejudge the policies of individual Member countries towards nuclear energy. It provides data and analyses on the nuclear option that policy makers may use together with information on alternative options to support their own assessments, trade-offs and choices in the energy field, taking into account national context and priorities. The publication is a contribution from the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) to the OECD project on sustainable development. It was prepared by the NEA Secretariat, with the assistance of experts in the fields of nuclear policy, economics, the environment and sustainable development. The text benefited from comments and suggestions from all relevant NEA Standing Technical Committees as well as experts from other OECD Directorates and the International Energy Agency. It is published under the responsibility of the Secretary-General of the OECD.
