From the publication:
Acknowledgements The articles of this book have been presented to a wide audience of Eastern- Central European environmentalist in June 1991 in Celakovice, near Prague in Czechoslovakia. The "Energy in Central and Eastern Europe: Nuclear Power and Energy Efficiency; Two Options" conference aimed to provide an opportunity to the Eastern-Central European non-governmental environmental organisations to understand more about the energy situation of the countries within the region, to learn more about the real face of the nuclear power and to learn what other options might be available for satisfying their energy demands. Numerous people within various organizations helped to form the program of the conference to achieve its goals. I am especially indebted to Gregory Kats and John Willis with Greenpeace International for assisting in developing the program of the conference as well as John Hontelez with Friends of the Earth, who together with Mara Silina with Greenway and all our friends with Brontosaurus helped to organize the conference. On behalf of the closely hundred participants of the conference I sincerely thank the Stewart C. Mott Foundation, the German Marshall Fund of the United States, the Czech and Slovak Federal Ministry for sharing the concerns of the NGOs in the East and West and supporting the conference. As editor I must extend thanks to the Regional Environmental Center, the Austrian Ministry for Environment, Youth and Family, the Alton Jones Foundation and the Milieu Contact Oost-Europa who made it possible to publish this book in Bulgarian, Czech, English, Hungarian, Romanian and Russian.
