INTRODUCTION

This information file has been put together in order to provide citizens with basic
information regarding accidents in the nuclear industry. This is not intended to be
a complete or definitive work; it is simply a compilation of information which
happened to be readily available to the editor. Since the vast majority of these
accidents are completely unknown to most citizens, even though the information
is relevant to current debate on the safety of nuclear power, it would appear that
the present work may serve a useful purpose, despite its limitations.
The term "accidents" is used in the colloquial sense; the events listed below are
not necessarily classified as "accidents" by the NRC or any other organization.
