aCBEReport CBE-7875 BACKGROUND FACTS ON PIPE CRACKING IN GENERAL ELECTRIC REACTORS 1. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND: In September, 1974, a series of cracks was found in a General Electric boiling water reactor belonging to Commonwealth Edison, the Dresden Nuclear Power Station Unit 2. The cracks occurred in 4-inch diameter bypass pipes and 10-inch diameter core spray pipes connected to the reactor. Shortly thereafter, cracks in similar lines at five other GE reactors were found, and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) ordered the plants shut down for inspection and repairs. The shutdown had a considerable impact on the electric utility industry, and no GE reactors have been ordered by any utility since that time.
