ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH "We nuclear people have made a Faustian bargain with society," nuclear scientist Alvin Weinberg has said. "On the one hand we otter an inexhaustible supply of energy, but the price that we demand of society for this magical energy source is both a vigilance and a longevity of our social institutions that we are quite unaccustomed to." NUCLEAR POWER. Its proponents say that in the wake of the oil embargo and the energy crisis, with dwindling reserves of fossil fuels, it is fortunate indeed thatthe world can turn to this "magical energy source," the power of the atom. Its critics say that the price is too high, that nuclear power creates deadly radioactive wastes which will persist for hundreds of thousands of years and which contain the raw material of atomic bombs. Fundamental decisions about nuclear power must soon be made. If its proponents prevail, it will play an increasingly dominant role in the supply of energy. But if its critics are persuasive, nuclear power may be phased out entirely. Recognizing the stakes, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch undertook late in the summer of 1976 an intensive inquiry into the most crucial aspects of the nuclear dilemma - particularly what to do about nuclear wastes. The result was this series of seven articles, published in January, examining thestate of present knowledge, past experience and future prospects. It is the newspaper's hope that this comprehensive report will advance public understanding and contribute to enlightened decision-making.
