1. Introduction

Nuclear waste - this theme has filled many square meters of newsprint during
recent years. Let us analyze some of the reasons why waste questions have
become decisive for the further introduction of nuclear power.

Any industrial process invariably gives rise to waste products. Society has tacitly
accepted this fact for many years. The reason why we have to fight against pollution
to-day is exactly because waste products have not been properly dealt with in the
past. Practically none of them were stored, and certainly no big effort was made
in order to evaluate their impact on the environment or on future generations.
