1. INTRODUCTION

The 1979 assessment of the suitability of the present site for dumping of radioactive
waste in the North-East Atlantic (1) was based on the IAEA generic model (2, 3)
originally developed for the identification of high-level wastes unsuitable for
dumping at sea and applicable to a wide range of ocean areas. Although at present
rates of disposal of wastes the doses calculated using the IAEA model are very small,
the Expert Group convened by NEA (l) recommended that the next review of the site
(scheduled for 1984) should make use of more site-specific information, taking
account of the particular features of the North Atlantic basin, and be less dependent
on the maximising assumptions of the generic model.

The purpose of this report is to define a co-ordinated research and environmental
surveillance programme-plan for the North-East Atlantic dump site that will allow
the radiation exposure to man to be predicted with a greater degree of reliability
and accuracy.
