FOREWORD Under the terms of the 1977 Decision of the OECD Council establishing a Multilateral Consultation and Surveillance Mechanism for Sea Dumping of Radioactive Waste, NEA is requested to assess (each five years), in consultation with the Environment Committee, the suitability of dumping sites proposed by the national authorities of participating countries and to keep under review those previously considered suitable. Following the last review made in 1980, another review of the continued suitability of the North-East Atlantic dump site used since 1971 was completed in 1985 by a Group of Experts from countries participating in the OECO Mechanism. The attached report describes the basis for the assessment and its conclusions and recommendations, agreed by all members of the Group with the exception of the expert from Denmark, whose reservations are reproduced in Annex VI.
