From the publication:
INTRODUCTION In an earlier report; (1) Brookhaven National Laboratory presented the conclusions of four panels that had been formed to review areas of technical uncertainty identified in the report NUREG-0956. (2) That review was made to assist the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in identifying relative importance of certain research programs on nuclear plant safety. The specific programs that were considered were directed to improving prediction of the source term following a hypothetical accident to a nuclear power plant. As an extension to this endeavor, the Office of Research of NRC requested that a fifth panel be formed to consider the way in which uncertainty had been determined in the Draft NUREG-1150. (3) This was done, and the following is the report based on the review. NUREG-1150 was not reviewed in all its aspects; that would have been a much more extensive task, consuming far more than the time devoted to this one. A comprehensive review is ongoing, and is being done by another group. So far as was possible, attention was confined in the present instance to estimation of uncertainty.
