has been an eventful year for the Ital Research Institute. Significant changes in
the research programme, the management team and personnel have taken place.
The year commenced with the celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the
Association Contract between Euratom and Ital. On this occasion the institute
acted as host of the final meeting of BEP contractors, working on genetic
engineering of agricultural species (Biomolecular Engineering Programme of
the Commission of the European Communities). This meeting was held from
27-30 January and attended by 150 participants representing 45 contracting
laboratories from member states.
In May, Dr. Ir. A. Ringoet, who led the Ital Research Institute for the last 7 years,
retired. To mark his contribution to Ital a forum was organized around the theme:
"Het waarborgen van genetische diversiteit" ("The preservation of genetic
diversity"). From May until September Prof. Dr. B. de Groot acted as interim
director. In September Dr. L. van Vloten-Doting was appointed as new director
of Ital.
During the year it was decided to terminate the project (137) "Improvement of the
biotechnological production of insecticides by Bacillus thuringiensis" and to
incorporate the Bacillus thuringiensis work, which has a very high potential both
for plant breeding and for crop protection, into the groups on molecular plant
breeding and soil biology, respectively.
In November a committee of external experts reviewed the Ital Research Institute.
In general the committee was favourably impressed by the quality of the research
programmes, the staff and the equipment. The committee stressed the importance
of close cooperation between soil biology and molecular biology, and advised the
condensation of the research programme in some fields.
