NUCLEAR POWER IN THE NETHERLANDS At present 6 percent of the electricity produced in the Netherlands is generated by means of nuclear energy. The other 94 percent is generated mainly by gas-, oil- and coal-fired stations. The first commercial nuclear reactor was commissioned in 1968 and the second one in 1973. The possibility of expanding the share of nuclear-generated electricity to at least 30 percent of the total electricity production has been discussed several times in the last fifteen years. Since the accident at Chjernobyl the majority of people in the Netherlands feels quite uncomfortable about the apparently large consequences of safety risks of certain reactor types. New research will have to show that these risks can be avoided, or that they can be made sufficiently small.
