Company Profile The "Brennelementlager Gorleben GmbH", or "BLG" (Fuel Element Storage Company Gorleben ltd.) is a subsidiary of the "Deutsche Gesellschaft für Wiederaufarbeitung von Kernbrennstoffen mbH" or "DWK" (German Company for Reprocessing of spent Nuclear Fuel ltd.). It is located at Gorleben, which is a village in the community of Gartow in the lüchow-Dannenberg county of the Federal State of Niedersachsen (lower Saxony). BLG operates the interim storage facility for spent fuel elements and radioactive waste materials. This facility was constructed by DWK and was completed in 1984. The task of BLG is to ensure proper storage of spent fuel elements and radioactive waste materials until they are either transferred for reprocessing at another facility or for final storage in an underground salt mine repository. The BLG facility employs a staff of approximately sixty. These employees comprise the technical and administrative staff, security, social services, and public relations personnel The major portion of the staff were recruited from the local communities.
