ELECTRICITE DE FRANCE and nuclear power.

Nuclear power plants now supply 70% of the electricity generated in France. This 
result was obtained by carrying out a major nuclear power program, and was made 
possible by the highly satisfactory operation of the some 50 nuclear units in service 
to date.

The electric power generating facilities have been developed with a single objective: 
supplying the consumers with electric power at minimum cost. Since 1973, the year 
of the first oil crisis, the use of nuclear power was extended to substitute uranium for 
oil, free the country from external fuel procurement constraints and protect currency 
reserves.

If French coal, hydraulic and nuclear supplies are considered together, electrical 
power is now 90%French. Imports of coal have stabilized, and the consumption of 
oil in EDF power plants has fallen: 14 million tonnes in 1973, less than 500 000 
tonnes in 1986.
