Generation and Transmission Group

The Generation and Transmission Group is one of four Electricité de France (EDF)
operational groups, the others being Research & Development, Plant Design and
Construction, and Distribution for electricity and gas. The Generation and
Transmission Group is responsible for generating and transmitting electrical energy
to the Distribution Group and to large industrial users.

The Group manages and operates EDF hydro and thermal plants (nuclear and fossil)
as well as all transmission lines and primary substations rated at 63 kV and over.
It also purchases excess energy production from independent companies throughout
France, and in some cases buys all the power generated by these companies. The
Group handles all French power soles and purchases abroad.

All EDF thermal and major hydro power stations ore built by the Plant Design and
Construction Group and transferred to the Generation and Transmission Group for
commercial operation. Smaller hydro plants, as well as all grid transmission
facilities, are constructed directly by the Generation and Transmission Group.

Because the Group is involved in several business activities (hydro and thermal
power generation and transmission), it utilizes o centralized organizational structure
in which all employees working in o given sector of activity report along the some
chain of command.

The Group comprises three operational divisions, each corresponding to o field of
activity: Hydro Generation, Nuclear and Fossil Generation, and Transmission (see
chart opposite). Each division has functional and support departments located at the
Head Office while operations ore handled by regional and local offices situated
throughout France. The activities of these three divisions, each responsible for
managing and operating the facilities under its responsibility, are coordinated by a
fourth, the Load Dispatching Division. Two other divisions, Fuel and Commercial,
operate out of the Group Head Office. The Fuel Division negotiates and administers
fuel purchase contracts and delivery for nuclear and fossil plants. The Commercial
Division handles energy soles and purchases with neighboring countries in Europe
and sells power directly to large high voltage industrial power users.

Regional and local operations managers report to Head Office managers in their
divisional chain of command. The various regional and local activities are
coordinated by liaison officers at the Group Head Office.

As of January 1, 1986, the Generation and Transmission Group staff numbered
37,240 employees (nearly one third of all EDF personnel). The work force is
assigned as follows: Hydro, 5,650; Nuclear and Fossil Generation. 23,535;
Transmission, 6,760; Load Dispatching 970.
