Introduction Not long ago, "French Fries" were renamed "Freedom Fries" in the United States, as part of an intense anti-French campaign following the French government's refusal to join the Iraq war. But the rage against France now seems forgotten. Not only are "French Fries" politically correct again, but France has become a role model in the U.S. and beyond, the nuclear power model. "It's time to look to the French," New York Times columnist Roger Cohen wrote. "They've got their heads in the right place, with nuclear power enjoying a 70 percent approval rating." Similarly, former Republican presidential candidate John McCain has wondered, "If France can produce 80 percent of its electricity with nuclear power, why can't we?"
