INTRODUCTION by G.VENDRYES

Atomic Energy Commission director for the industrial uses of nuclear energy.

The Creys-Malville fast reactor- the first to achieve the size of future commercial
units, 1200 MWe – is being built in a European framework. In 1973 Rheinisch-
Westphälisches Elektrizitätswerk, Ente Nazionale per l'Energia Elettrica and
Electricité de France took the decision to work together to build and operate two
large prototype power stations of this type, the first to be built in France and the
second in Germany. It would be difficult to overstate the clear-sightedness of these
three electricity producers - among the largest in the world -who in this way asserted
their conviction that the satisfaction of Europe's medium-term energy requirements
necessarily involved the development of breeder reactors.

The collaboration thus established between the electricity suppliers opened the way
for the research and development and industrial agreements entered into by France
and Italy in 1974 and by France and Germany in 1977. Previous ties already existed
linking Germany to Belgium and the Netherlands. Five European countries are
therefore now pooling their workforces, their resources and their know-how in
order to develop this technology at the industrial level.

In March 1977, the contract for the Creys-Malville reactor vessel was awarded by
Nersa, the company set up by the electricity suppliers, to Novatome and Nira acting
in conjunction. Construction of the power station is going ahead satisfactorily with
only minor departures from the planned timetable.

It is true that some problems have been encountered - and solved - during the initial
stage of the project. For example, the design engineers have considered it necessary
to revise and supplement the arrangements made for the removal of decay heat in
the extreme case of a failure of all the normal circuits. However, second thoughts of
this kind are the order of the day in projects far more convention al than the present
one. No wonder, then, that they occur in an undertaking which is without precedent
anywhere in the world.
