1 Aim of the research The ultimate aim in radioactive waste management is to isolate the waste from the biosphere at least for the time necessary for the radiotoxicity to diminish to a level that is considered to have no impact or to pose no threat as far as public health is concerned. This isolation is achieved through implementing technical concepts and setting up administrative processes, both of which must be adapted to the type of waste considered. The technical concepts are based on the principle of various complementary barriers, basically the waste package, the artificial structures including the sealing material and the geological layers. The administrative processes must provide for the decision-making mechanisms for setting up and closing down the repository and for those aimed at preventing or slowing down the voluntary or involuntary baring of the waste. Further research should lead to a realistic frame of reference that will be assessed from the point of view of implementing costs, which in turn will serve as a basis for calculating the sums to be set aside for setting up the repository.
