Belgian nuclear programme The origin of the development of nuclear energy applications in Belgium dates back to the beginning of the '50's. The main steps have been: - in 1957, a team of Belgian engineers participated in the start-up of the Shippingport power plant (United States), the first commercial PWR (pressurized water reactor) unit; - in 1962, commissioning of the BR-3 at Mol (11 MW), first PWR built outside the United States; - in 1967, commissioning of a joint French/Belgian unit at Chooz (310MW PWR). The experience accumulated over these years led quite naturally to Doel 1 and 2 (392 MW each) and Tihange 1 (870MW) being ordered in 1969. These units were ordered at a time of relative tranquillity re oil crises, and the commercial operation came just in time to curb Belgium's dependency on oil and, consequently, ease its balance of payments. In 1974 when the first oil crisis occurred, the decision was taken to speed up the nuclear programme and to start the construction of 4 new units on the existing Tihange and Doel sites. The first two, rated 900MW, were respectively commissioned in October 1982 (Doel3) and February 1983 (Tihange 2).
