Introduction This booklet is about nuclear power – generating electricity by burning uranium instead of coal or oil. It has been prepared by the UK Atomic Energy Authority. It tells you : how nuclear power works; what stage of development it has reached in Britain ; what it costs and how safe it is ; why it is important to Britain now and in the future. If you want to learn more about nuclear power, other information can be had from the UKAEA free. Films on nuclear energy can be borrowed, free, by schools and other organisations. Requests for speakers to address schools, colleges and local organisations are welcomed and every effort is made to meet them.
