INTRODUCTION

It is widely known that a large Government atomic energy organisation has been 
built up in Great Britain since 1946 ; a good deal has been written about some of its 
activities, for example, the distribution of radioactive isotopes for use in medicine 
and in industry and the work of its research establishment at Harwell, but for reasons 
of security it has not hitherto been found possible to give any account of the activities 
of the production side of the organisation, that is the side charged with the design, 
construction, and operation, of the factories which are needed for the manufacture of 
fissile material and the generation of power. Although the need to keep the strictest 
guard on any information likely to be valuable to a potential enemy has in no way 
diminished, it is now possible to tell something of the work of the production side, 
work that has involved the design and construction of engineering works unequalled 
in this country for complexity, novelty, and size. The purpose of this report is to give 
a description, in such detail as security permits, of the construction and operation of 
these works, primarily for the general reader, though it is hoped that it will not be 
without interest for the scientist and engineer. The development of atomic energy has 
involved so many unfamiliar ideas and is based upon such new and, to the layman, 
startling discoveries in physics, that it is thought desirable to append to our account 
of the engineering work a short summary of these discoveries and of the physical 
basis upon which the development rests. The scientific reader will find nothing in 
the Appendix which will be unfamiliar to him but it is hoped that to the layman it 
will be a useful complement to the rest of the book.
