Introduction SAFE FOR ALL TIME- title of a video produced by UK Nirex Ltd. The nuclear industry is producing vast amounts of lethal waste, and it doesn't have any idea what to do with it' - Jane Wildblood, Greenpeace. There are many issues in the continuing debate over nuclear power in which the perceptions of the industry and of its opponents are different. In most cases, though, there is a degree of common ground. For example, the British nuclear power industry believes that its safety standards are very high: some of its critics have described nuclear power as 'unacceptably dangerous'. Yet 'both sides', if the issue can be viewed in such simplistic terms, agree that, say, Chernobyl was a huge international disaster; that absolute safety can never be assured; but that the nuclear industry in the UK has a good safety record so far. The dispute is a matter of degree. Both sides wish to reduce emissions of radiation to a minimum, though they may disagree over the possible effects, or lack of effects, that radiation may cause. Both sides point to the importance of safe transport of spent nuclear fuel.
