Introducing the Pressurised Water Reactor: How Many would You Like? Britain has nuclear power stations from Caithness to Dorset. There is even one in Suffolk, called Sizewell A. Now its owner, the Central Electricity Generating Board, wants to build another one next door and call it Sizewell B. But Sizewell B is the most controversial nuclear project in British history. Why the excitement? The reason is that Sizewell B is to be the first of a family of six reactors using technology new to Britain. Called Pressurised Water Reactors, they differ technically from those already in use in Britain, using water rather than gas to carry heat away from the reactor itself. This difference in cooling systems has serious and negative implications for safety.
