The Sizewell 'B' inquiry has focused attention on the direction which British nuclear energy policy will take for decades to come-we are at the Atomic Crossroads. The author begins by recounting the little-known history of Britain's involvement in the technology. British-based scientists were responsible for the first theoretical understanding of the fission bomb in 1940, the independent bomb in 1952, and the world's first nuclear power programme four years later. Despite the failure of the latest reactor type-the worst disaster in British nuclear history-the momentum engendered in those years is still a dominant force in energy policy. In the second part the author discusses the issues that occupied the Sizewell inquiry for more than two years; the economics of the Pressurised Water Reactor and the forecasts used to justify it; the arguments within the industry over reactor choice, and the haste with which the Sizewell PWR design was drawn up. The third part examines reprocessing, cancer incidences around Sellafield; the CEGB's plutonium stockpile; issues of nuclear waste disposal and the direction which research is taking. The author participated in the Sizewell inquiry in which generic and real issues were discussed. He presents the arguments for and against fairly and objectively making a persuasive case against further nuclear development.
