INTRODUCTION DOUNREAY is situated in Caithness on the north coast of Scotland, ten miles from the thriving market town of Thurso and some thirty miles from John o' Groats. The site, based on a former wartime airfield, was taken over by the U.K.A.E.A. in 1955 and the first buildings became operational in 1957. The work of the establishment is directed towards improving methods of producing nuclear power. The main feature of Dounreay is the fast breeder reactor- a large scale experiment which is providing the information and experience to enable a commercial power station of this advanced type to be designed and built in the future. There is also a materials testing reactor in which experiments can be carried out on new nuclear fuels and structural materials under irradiation conditions similar to those in power reactors. Dounreay is unique amongst atomic energy establishments because it has on the same site as the reactors, all the chemical and metallurgical laboratories and plants which are needed to service and supply them. This booklet describes some of the work of the five divisions which make up the establishment.
