From the early 1960's nuclear power has played an important role in Scotland. With 17% of installed electricity generation capacity nuclear, Scotland occupies a leading position among the countries of the western world in the use of nuclear power. In terms of amounts of nuclear generated electricity in relation to population, she stands fifth with 653 units per head. At the same time Scotland has contributed much to world nuclear development: the Dounreay Nuclear Power Development Establishment in Caithness, for example, is known throughout the world for its work on fast reactors.
