Preface

The question has been asked whether, and if so to what extent, from the geological
viewpoint, the salt domes in North Jutland can be of use for the storage of high
radioactive waste. The possible suitability of the Mors, Vejrum, Uglev and Linde
salt structures is of particular interest.

First, in part 1 of this report, the significance of some geological phenomena should
be emphasized which seen from the basis of many years long experience in salt
problems, especially in salt mines - are fundamentally important for the projects in
North Jutland, even if they appear less distinct in local view. Furthermore (part 2)
the different objects shall be taken in consideration with regard to their geological
particularities.

(This report does not touch on problems concerning the behaviour of salt rocks and
salt minerals due to the changes in the physical or chemical environment caused by
the deposited substances, the rock mechanics, the disposal techniques a.s.o. a.s.o.)

The knowledge of the "Proceedings - Radioactive Waste Disposal- Symposium" ,
Copenhagen, December 1979, printed Nov. 1980, is referred to herewith. Its authors
are cited with "Proc." … I also relate to discussions with geoscientists of DGU, KBB,
PRAKLA. I mention especially the collaboration with my colleague Prof. Dr. E.
Hofrichter. My own knowledge is based on individual older core studies of Suldrup
("Boreudvalget" 1960/62) and of later wells, too.
