Introduction

The International Atomic Energy Agency is an intergovernmental organization 
within the United Nations system. Established on 29 July 1957, one of its main 
statutory aims is to "seek to accelerate and enlarge the contribution of atomic 
energy to peace, health and prosperity throughout the world".

To meet this objective the Agency has developed technical co-operation programmes 
which respond to requests from Member States for aid and advice in different areas 
of the Agency's activities. These programmes help to transfer the technology and 
expertise that the Agency has at its disposal to those parts of the world that can 
benefit most from it.

By assessing and demonstrating the feasibility of new projects, developing new 
methods to implement them and providing training in the techniques that are used, 
the IAEA Laboratory at Seibersdorf plays an important role in helping the Agency 
to reach its technical co-operation objectives.
