1. INTRODUCTION

Slovak Government in its letter No. 68 from February 4th 1992 about "Energy policy
for Slovak republic till the year 2005" ordered minister of economy (Josef Belcák) to
discuss energy policy with environmental groups.

Foundation for alternative energy (FAE), as a part of the greatest Slovak
environmental organisation - Slovak Union of Nature and Landscape Protectors, was
the only Slovak environmental subject which took part in discussion held on April
30th 1992 at ministry of economy.

The main principles of FAE's ecological energy policy are based on connection of
energy efficiency measures and experiences of developed countries with the
economical and ecological (reduction of pollution) possibilities of Slovakia.

FAE’s ultimate goal is to change Slovak energy system which is based on permanent
increase of energy supply towards the system oriented on increase of energy
efficiency, energy conservation and renewable energy sources. This shift will realize
the huge potential of energy savings available in Slovakia with lower costs as
compared to development of such projects as nuclear power plants or hydro power
plant Gabčikovo.
