26.4.1986: Chernobyl: One Year On These and other questions are considered in an interview granted to Anatoli Lepikhov, an APN correspondent by Academician Valeri Legasov, First Deputy Director of the Kurchatov Institute of Atomic Energy in Moscow. Academician Legasov was a scientific adviser and member of the emergency commission set up by the government to deal with the Chernobyl accident in the dramatic days when the atomic energy had to be brought under control. Since scientists first combined two uranium-filled hemispheres into a single body with a critical mass, the possible consequences of the rebellion of the atom have been discussed in many publications. By and large, the prospects outlined are so awful that one catches oneself thinking that it is all too dreadful ever to happen. But the truth is that it has already happened. And the catastrophe occurred where it was least expected-at a peaceful enterprise, the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Now that a year has passed since the accident, the time has come for a detailed analysis of what happened. Why did it happen? What if any, are the medical and biological consequences of the accident? Will those who were evacuated be able to return to the 30-kilometre zone around the plant? Do they need additional means of accident prevention? Are the Chernobyl-type reactors safe? Will the nuclear power industry continue to operate?
