Physicist Vladimir Chernousenko is eminently qualified to write on this topic: as the 
Scientific Director of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences he was in Chernobyl from 
May 1986 until March 1991, and is the co-author of various internal and (in spite of 
glasnost') stilt classified reports on Chernobyl.
The book includes an absorbing account of the events of April 26, 1986, as well as a 
review of the rectification measures taken. Vladimir Chernousenko disects the causes 
of the disaster and confronts us with startling details about critical design faults 
in the RBMK-reactors - of which another 15 are still in operation! Then he draws 
attention to the far-reaching, long-term effects this global disaster will have on man 
and environment; they will be with us for the next few centuries. A wealth of new, 
previously unpublished data is included along with proposals for future actions.
