INTRODUCTION In November 1989, the Alliance of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies of the USSR proposed that the League undertake consultations with regard to the present situation in the areas affected by the Chernobyl disaster, with a view to establishing international cooperation in this field. As a result, a League team of 6 people visited the Soviet Union on 9th-16th January 1990 in order to carry out such an assessment.
