PREFACE The Coordinating Committee for the Monitoring of Radioactivity and Xenobiotic Substances (CCRX) has as its task the evaluation of the systematic monitoring programmes carried out by the different government institutes and the coordination of the exchange of measurement data among these institutes. The CCRX fulfils its task, among others, by the collection of data on measurements of radioactive and xenobiotic materials in the biological environment of the Netherlands and the yearly presentation of these data in a well-organized form. Following the serious accident at the nuclear power station at Chernobyl, the Minister of Housing, Physical Planning and Environmental Protection requested that the CCRX report on the extra contamination of man and environment with radioactivity as a result of that accident. Thanks to the cooperation of all the Netherlands institutes and establishments working in this area, it appeared possible to give a detailed survey of the contamination in the Netherlands within a short time. In its report, the CCRX has also made recommendations for the provision of extra measuring capacity in order to continue to follow the further course of the radioactivity. In the coming Annual Reports of the CCRX, an account of this course will be given. That report will undoubtedly play an important role in the improvement of the current emergency regulations from the standpoints of the provision, collection and evaluation of measurement data. The Chairman of the CCRX Ir. drs. R.B.J.C. van Noort.
