Energy situation in the Slovak Republic (1993)

1. INTRODUCTION

The Slovak Republic with its 5.5 million inhabitants became an independent state 
on January 1. 1993. The split-up of Czechoslovakia has led to economical problems 
on both sides. After a half of a year of the existence of the Slovak Republic, the 
problems are evidently much bigger on the Slovak sidle The energy policy of this 
new republic is going to play a key role in the build-up of Slovakia as a democratic 
and politically as well economically stabile Central - European country.

The present situation in the Slovak energetics is dominated by lack of money for the 
completion of the nuclear power plant in Mochovce (0,9 billion USD) which is intend 
to substitute the nuclear power plant in Jaslovské Bohunice. The decision for phasing 
out 2 blocks (each 440 MW) of Jaslovské Bohunice in 1995 is driven by a poor safety 
level of this nuclear power plant, which is below international standards. The phasing 
out of Bohunice by other nuclear power plant is very questionable now because the 
credit for completion of Mochovce is intended to be paid by export of winter 
electricity for 12 years.
Exported price of electricity is suggested (by West European investors) to be lower 
than average price of electricity in Slovakia.
