2 Introduction

This report describes my 5 weeks study tour to the United States of America in the 
fall of 1988. I travelled in 11 U.S.A. states and 7 major cities, in order to visit 
several electric utilities and research institutes in the energy-field.

The main means of transportation was the aeroplane. Shorter distances were covered 
by (Greyhound) buses and, when available, city public transportation systems, 
varying from the romantic San Francisco Cable Car to the late 20th century Boston 
Area Rail Transport systems. In several cities however, I behaved like many other 
people: being a pedestrian. This happened to be very comfortable: the american car-
drivers drive slower and much more polite than their european colleagues.
From Texas through the Rocky Mountains of Colorado and Utah, towards Los 
Angeles, I drove a week in a huge american sized car.

The purpose of my visit was to gather information on the american utilities state of 
the art with respect to Electricity Conservation, Demand-Side Management, Least-
Cost Planning, Integrated Resource planning, Load Management and Load Research, 
as well as on the current research topics in the National Laboratories and Universities 
on these topics.

During preparation of the journey, I wrote and phoned to several institutes in order 
to make some initial appointments. During my trip I was able to change my travel 
scheme as much as necessary to add interesting organisations to the list of institutes 
to be visited.

This report is structures according to the organisations I visited. To describe all the 
information I gathered in 5 weeks of listening and talking is hardly possible. The most 
interesting topics are highlighted. Some in detail, others are only mentioned very 
briefly. A time schedule can be found in the appendices.

For interested readers I included a list of publications. This list contains both 
comprehensive reports and short articles. Most of the reports can be ordered from the 
original authors. A list of addresses is included as well. For dutch readers it may be 
more convenient to pay a visit to Groningen. The reports will be filed in the library 
of the Center for Energy and Environmental Studies.
