CONCLUSIONS:

We acknowledge with humility our lack of technical/scientific expertise in many
of these matters, while recognizing that within the Church there are laity who have
experience in these areas and can be of valuable assistance. We confess that we have
not taken seriously enough our responsibility to grapple not only with the specific
question of plutonium use, but with the entire area of energy use and production,
and the attendant questions which will affect us and our posterity.

We feel need for a process by which the Church can enter into a serious, wide-
ranging and deep investigation of the moral, ethical, and theological implications
and ramifications of an appropriate Christian lifestyle in the United States, especially
as that relates to energy consumption and production; our stewardship responsibilities
to the environment and to all Creation, present and future; and our responsibilities as
members of one human family to ensure that the benefits of technology are received
by all people.

Balancing all the factors, we feel that to continue in the course of plutonium
development presently proposed by our government is to move too fast into areas of
uncertainty which contain potentially disastrous effects for the future of humanity.
We are not convinced of the need to move ahead so rapidly, and ask for time to
enable the people of this country to study the issues, weigh the consequences, and
decide the crucial questions in light of the imperatives of our faith.
