In this urgent book, Barry Commoner speaks out against nuclear power and for solar energy-and rallies Americans in opposition to the administration's Energy Plan, a plan he believes is at once destructive of our resources and our economy and doomed to failure. He makes it evident that the people of the United States have been given scraps of contradictory information about the energy crisis and are largely unaware of the facts. He documents how the administration has tampered with its own figures to make it appear that its design for future use of oil and coal is absolutely essential. He examines the Carter Plan and demonstrates: 1) bow-far from reducing demand through conservation-it actually increases the drain on non-renewable energy sources; 2) how the heavy economic burden of cutting back on the use of energy will fall on those least able to sustain it-not industry but the private consumer; 3) how the administration's reliance on higher energy prices will result not in conserving energy but in radically intensifying the inflationary spiral; and 4) why the Plan, instead of solving, merely prolongs the energy crisis. What, then, should we do? Clearly and logically Commoner sets forth the case for a new energy system based on renewable sources and examines the two choices we have-solar energy or the nuclear breeder. He discusses not only the awesome dangers of accident and sabotage that are inherent in nuclear power, but also its prohibitive real costs. He shows how we can begin now a serious use of solar energy, a steady decrease in the importation of oil, and a cutback in nuclear power. He shows us in everyday terms how solar energy works, how it can be put to use on a community-by-community basis, and how we can speed the shift to its use on a nationwide scale. His closely reasoned book leads to an inescapable conclusion: despite the arguments of government and industry in favor of nuclear energy, the realities of the world are pointing us to the solar solution.
