This brochure is about managing high-level nuclear waste. It discusses the need for permanent disposal and explains why our government is studying deep underground burial in a geologically stable repository. It also focuses on reasons why Nevada's Yucca Mountain might be an appropriate site for such a repository. Waste management has long been a topic of interest to scientists and engineers as well as the general public. It is a complex issue that is often misunderstood. This brochure provides a factual perspective and an overall look at the direction the high-level waste project is taking. The first commercial nuclear powerplant in the United States began operation in 1957. Since then, the United States has come to rely on nuclear energy as a significant source of electric power (second only to coal since 1982), and for important contributions to medicine, research, and defense. But the benefits of nuclear energy come coupled with a great challenge: safe disposal of radioactive waste. Radioactive waste results whenever we put nuclear fission to work. Some waste is created by every nuclear activity. High-level waste is generated by the production of electricity in commercial nuclear powerplants and the production of nuclear materials for national defense. At powerplants, this waste is contained inside the spent fuel assemblies - the power source for the reactor.
