THE CASE AGAINST OYSTER CREEK NUCLEAR REACTOR: AN UNNECESSARY RISK Oyster Creek is one of the oldest reactors in the nation and is suffering serious age-related degradation, compounding problems with an antiquated and dangerous reactor design. Surrounding ecology cannot survive the plant's operation and its electricity is not essential. In short, there is no sound public policy basis for continuing to operate Oyster Creek beyond its intended lifespan. • Ecological Havoc: Oyster Creek uses an outdated cooling water system that has an enormous impact on the surrounding marine ecosystem. In fact, the dredging of the cooling water canal in the 1960s caused the Forked River to reverse its flow. Oyster Creek also has adverse impacts on marine species, killing fish and threatened and endangered turtles. • High Air Emissions: Oyster Creek has emitted more radiation than almost every other plant in the country combined. • Growing Population & Impossible Evacuation: The plant is located near dense and growing population canters with poor access routes that at certain times of the year would make a quick evacuation impossible. • Antiquated & Unsafe Reactor Design: The Boiling Water design of this 40 year old reactor would not be licensed today and has even been acknowledged by industry supporters as problematic.
