Ultimately, each individual must face The nuclear challenge • Can Solar, Wind, or Biomass Energy fulfill our energy requirements? • Can radioactive wastes be stored or will they threaten new civilizations thousands of years in the future? • Was Detroit "almost lost'' in a nuclear catastrophe? • What threat do terrorists and saboteurs pose to nuclear installations? • Do we need Nuclear Energy? Earth's non-renewable energy supplies are being rapidly depleted, and new sources of energy have to be found. In the midst of this search, controversy exists concerning which form these new sources should take. It began as a technological controversy but as the implications and effects of energy shortages become more apparent to more people, it has changed into a human controversy. One in which everyone must become involved. That is why The Nuclear Challenge: Understanding The Debate is an important book. In a straightforward style, with a minimum of jargon, it presents to the layperson a clear and rational argument for nuclear power as the most environmentally benign way of meeting our present energy needs. The Author Alan Wyatt has been involved in nuclear engineering for fourteen years since his early work on the design of the Douglas Point Nuclear Station.
