ABSTRACT This report analyses the existing uranium mining situation in Canada with the perspective of pointing out and documenting some health and environmental problems. It is not intended to judge the industry as a whole, nor to compare it to other industries. Discussed are the following three major problem areas: the radiation and dust hazard to uranium miners, and their treatment by industry, government, and the medical profession; mill waste mismanagement; and the hazards of exploration. As well, for background purposes, an overview of the first and second exploration and mining booms is included. The major problem documented in the report is that uranium mining can destroy the health of, and kill miners; and catastrophically affect the immediate surrounding environment, contaminating it forever. More specifically, two problems documented are: that there is no known method of stopping contamination from uranium mill wastes; and that Canada is currently experiencing a second uranium exploration and mining boom, with active federal and provincial government support and involvement.
