Nuclear India This is an objective, up-to-date study of the status and development of Nuclear India-the first comprehensive overview of the background, the history and development of Nuclear Technology in India, as well as an assessment of Its capability in the area today. In the face of the fast dwindling of traditional sources of energy like coal and petroleum, India, as a developing country with growing energy requirements must find an alternative economical and abundant fuel source. Attention, not only in our country, but the world over, has been focussed on nuclear energy as the only immediate alternative. This study assesses the country's rate of progress in the field of nuclear technology and surveys the working of the various nuclear programmes launched by the Department of Atomic Energy, discussing the history, development, future projections and prospects of each. Within the framework of the assessment provided by the study, could be analysed how the target capacity of 10,000 MWe (laid down by the Planning Commission's Working Group on Energy) could be achieved as against the present capacity of 640 MWe. For the lack of a clear picture of the situation and the association of atomic energy with Hiroshima-Nagasaki and recently with controversies about nuclear safety in the west, the Indian perspective on atomic energy and its uses have been confused. Any debate on the status and future of nuclear technology in India has tended to be more emotional than rational. The technology, in our country, as pointed out by Dr. Sethna in his introductory essay to the book, is still simplistically viewed "as an expensive even vulgar showpiece in an island of hunger, poverty and illiteracy." The study provides the first logical discussion of the advantages of developing this energy option in India. The authors have not shied away from controversial issues related to nuclear safety; prevention of radiation hazards from atomic power plants and effective management of waste disposal.
