INTRODUCTION

The Philippine archipelago extends about 1,100 miles (1,770) km.) north to south
along the southeastern rim of Asia, forming a land chain between the Pacific Ocean
on the east and the South China Sea on the west. It is separated from Taiwan on the
north and Malaysia and Indonesia on the south by straits that are a few miles wide
and from Vietnam and China on the west by the 600-mile (966 km.) breadth of the
South China Sea.

The archipelago, with its round-the-year tropical climate, comprises 7,100 beautiful
islands and islets of varying sizes, rich in white-sand beaches, tropical vegetation,
virgin forests and lakes and rivers. It covers a total land area of 115,707 square miles
(or 229,679 sq. kms.). Eleven of the major islands make up about 95% of the total
land area and population. It has a population of 56 million, 97% of which is literate.

Basically an agricultural country, much of the Philippines' farmland is devoted to
rice, corn, coconut and sugar. There are substantial exports of sugar, coconut
products, bananas, abaca (Manila hemp) and timber. Copper, iron, chromite and
gold are among the most important minerals exploited.

But aside from these, the Philippines is also the site of the largest and most
important overseas American military bases and facilities in Asia. These bases
contain stockpiles of nuclear weapons that are integrally tied to the Pentagon's
nuclear warfighting plans. They serve as a springboard for intervention in the
Middle East and Northeast Asia.

WELCOME TO A NUCLEAR COLONY OF THE UNITED STATES.
